Having been in the rigamarole of finding a new job for the past month or so, I've really begun to learn the value of money. Not that I didn't know it before, but I wasn't as aware of what actually made a difference in my life after I'd spent my hard earned money on it. Because I was getting a fairly good pay cheque at my old office job, I never really paid any attention to what I was buying. I only ever paid attention to what I wanted and how it made me feel in the moment. Once the hunger for something new was satiated, I went back to being dispassionate with my belongings rather than really enjoying the new additions.
Since I now have to really pay attention to how I spend my money and what I spend it on, I've formulated a few minimalist mantras that I make a point of repeating to myself any time I feel the itch to shop. These mantras are constantly changing, but they will usually ask important questions so that I know what I am buying and what I will be getting out of my purchases. I thought these would be useful for anyone attempting minimalism, even in the smallest way, so I compiled them into a short list. It really makes a difference when you are aware of why you feel the need to shop and where your money is going.
I'm not going to say that I always follow my own advice because I have been wont to toss it out at the sight of a cute dress, but I have been making a conscious effort to not blindly support a compulsive consumerist mentality by trying to invest in valuable things. Whether that be a good pair of shoes that'll last me a few years, or a new bag that I know I will be using every day. There can definitely be more than 5 mantras, but I thought we'd start slow for today's post.

3) TAKE YOUR TIME WHEN DECIDING ON A PURCHASE
4) 1 THING IN, 1 THING OUT
