For any regular reader of Katsomething, It’s no secret that I have a mild to severe obsession with the true crime genre. I would have found this obsession a bit worrisome if it didn’t seem to be gaining more momentum what with all the TV shows and movies recently flooding Netflix. I can’t really say how it started, but I can say it hasn’t been slowing down and I know that there are many people out there like me that are fascinated by these real life mysteries.
For those of you who have never delved into the genre before and are curious as to what all the hubbub is about, I decided to compile a short list of some necessary TV shows and movies to watch if you are interested or dabbling in true crime. All of these are on Netflix; super accessible and easily devoured within a few days if you put your mind to it. I’m not ashamed to admit that I watched many of the shows in their entirety during uneventful weekends. While some of the subject matter can be morbid, the fascination I have lies with the human psyche and what drives people to certain extents. This applies also to the survivors of any attacks; their resilience and bravery are admirable and should be taken note of.
1) Forensic Files
This is a classic and a good starting point for anyone dipping their toes in true crime. This series gives us hope that any cases can be solved with forensics and imparts the confidence in law enforcement that seems to be wavering these days.
2) Making A Murderer
The devastating tale of a young man being thrown in prison twice for crimes he (seemingly) did not commit. If you want to experience a bit of heartbreak a long with flexing your detective muscles then this is the show for you.
3) Who Took Johnny
Unsolved cases always leave me uneasy, but what is so fascinating about this story is the lengths to which Johnny’s mother goes to try and find her son after his kidnapping. To many she looked crazy, but it's her strength and perseverance was undeniable
4) Partners In Crime
This show is not for the faint of heart. It’s a very technical account of crime cases and because it is fairly recent, it makes the content that much more terrifying. However, the forensic investigators and the various participants solving these cases have extraordinary knowledge that can only be appreciated by watching it in action.
5) West of Memphis
While on the outside this documentary may seem somewhat depressing, once watched all the way through it is a story of hope and forgiveness. The three boys convicted of a brutal crime and sentenced to many years in prison finally receive a helping hand to give them back their freedom.
I’d love to hear of any new true crime shows or movies. Feel free to let me know of any in the comments!
