It’s seems like this past year has been the worst for my skin. Maybe it was hormones or just weather changes and the impromptu trip to Greece I took in late February that also immensely dried out my skin. For a time, it felt like this was going to be my life—a spotty faced 24 year old, reliving her pubescent years. Since I began getting these overwhelming breakouts (at least once a week) I went through various different routines with different products, some low and high end, just to see what my skin liked. This has been a puzzle that I am still trying to piece together seeing as I’m still getting the odd weekly blemish.
For most of my 20’s I was using La Roche Posay, which can be considered medium to high end (the moisturizer always costs double the cleanser) and it had been working effortlessly. I rarely had to use concealer for red spots and I thought that I’d finally found the routine for my skin after years of searching. Unfortunately, a year ago my skin began breaking out with no real reason. I guess our bodies are always changing and can begin reacting to external and internal stimulants at any moment. Within these 12 months I’ve gone through La Roche Posay, Aveeno, Nivea, Spectro Gel, and Clinique. Most didn’t do much for my skin, except for the Clinique that did clear it up, but left it insanely dry. The cleanser, toner and moisturizer all had salicylic acid in them so I was constantly stripping my skin of any oil, which only caused it to overproduce oil and instigate more breakouts later on in the week.
I’m happy to say that I’ve settled down with the help of a few ladies at Shoppers Drug Mart who pointed me in the direction of Biotherm and the brand’s gel moisturizer instead of a cream. For the most part, this cleanser has been gentle on my skin, but cuts through my makeup without too much effort. My face never feels dry or itchy after I’ve finished cleansing, just a bit tight, reminding me to put on some of the moisturizer. The downfall of this routine is that the moisturizer is about $60 dollars, which pains me to even think about. However it has lasted me a good few month and a toonie size amount will get me through to the end of the week because not much is needed to coat your entire face.
I do plan on repurchasing these products because this is the first time in a year I’ve seen my skin this clear. Hopefully this routine lasts me the next while because it has been exhausting trying to figure out my skin and what formulas work for it. The turquoise colour set I use is the basic cleanser and moisturizer, but I have been told that every colour in the line works towards a different purpose for various skin types and specific concerns.
