After a long day at work, getting home at night is a joyous thing. There’s nothing better than kicking off your shoes and changing into those comfy leggings before curling up on the couch to watch a movie or have dinner. While I am fairly low maintenance when it comes to skin care and overall self-pampering, there are a few things that have become ritual for me before I call it a night and head to bed. These steps have changed a lot throughout the years but I thought I’d outline the current ones I’ve been taking and a few of the essential products I’ve been using.
BIOTHERM || This first thing I do and have done for many years thus far is cleanse and moisturize my face. I find that it’s especially important to do this after a long day because of all the bacteria and pollutants I am exposed to on a daily basis living in a busy city. My skin care for the past couple of months has been Bitoherm’s cleanser and moisturizer. These have been working very well for me since I made the switch from my previous go-to, La Roche Posay.
Not only does the cleanser cut through all of my makeup, but the moisturizer is gel based and leaves the skin feeling soft and light after application. I had previously been using many cream based moisturizers and I found that a lot of the time they were very heavy and thick for my skin, causing random breakouts. I use the regular version of Biotherm’s range, but there are differences ones for different skin issues that may need to be targeted.
BIODERMA || However, if I have a lot of makeup on or am not just hopping in the shower (where I usually use my cleanser) then I will use Bioderm makeup remove to get rid of my makeup. I have been obsessed with this product since I bought it because of how light the formula is. Any past makeup removers I’ve used have all been extremely oil based and usually stung my eyes when taking off my mascara, but so far I haven’t had any issues with Bioderma and am very happy I listened to all the reviews of it an bought it myself.
After I take a nice hot shower to get rid of any dirt and grime from the constant subway travel, I will opt to do a face mask about once a week just to give my skin that extra boost. My current favourite has been Mask of Magnanimity from Lush, mentioned in my post last week, but I've also picked up a Fresh Beauty mask from Sephora as part of my birthday gift which I’m excited to test out.
Unwinding after a busy and sometimes annoying day is the most important part of a nighttime routine for me. I need to take some time to let go of the day’s stress and recharge before going to work again the next day. Every night is different for accomplishing this, depending on if I’ve gone out with a friend after work or visited my family which usually means I come home later than normal, but most of what I need to do is the same despite how little time I may have to do it on specific nights.
READ & JOURNAL WRITE || These two activities used to be necessities for me when I used to live at my parent’s house because I would spend most of my night holed up in my bedroom. But now I that live with my boyfriend, we try to spend as much time together in the evenings as we can because of our full-time jobs. So, journal writing isn’t one of my main priorities anymore but I do still think it is a great way to relax. By writing down all your thoughts it acts as a release that let’s you calm down a bit and feel somewhat revitalized. I find this is especially helpful for people like me who tend to internalize any problems they may be having. After a while of bottling them up your mental health can be desperately affected.
Reading is what I aim to do every night now. While I do try to have a book on my nightstand at all times, I count reading a blog or magazine under the same umbrella. Just taking your mind off of yourself for a bit really helps to direct your energy onto something more productive like learning or just overall enjoyment.
DRINK TEA || This has quickly become a necessity now that the days are getting colder and all I want to do is curl up on the couch. I will always reach for a loose-leaf tea from the cupboard as a nice and delicious way to end the day. The flavour I've been loving for late fall, early winter is Snow Day--a strong chocolate peppermint that’s perfect for digestion after a big meal.
MOVIE NIGHT || The last thing I typically do on a week night is cuddle up on the couch with my boyfriend and watch a movie or a TV show. We’ve currently been watching Westworld on a weekly basis, but we also have many movies on our list that we’ve been trying to get through. If we’re not casually watching something, we’ll probably be taking notes for our movie podcast that involves us watching a movie that one of us has seen and the other hasn’t and deciding whether it’s worth a second viewing. This has quickly become a fun hobby for us since we already talk a lot throughout movies when we watch them. We’ve posted the first episode of our podcast up on iTunes so feel free to check that out and leave us a review. It may be a bit sloppy as we were both getting used to the dynamic of a recorded discussion, but I think the most recent ones we’ve recorded are even better.
